Mended Hearts
Just as a trembling seedling holds its breath
Beneath the icy fingers of snow flaked hills
Nourished by the purple of twilight and the lullaby of wind song
A tender seed, desperate to shake off its restraints
To finally break away from unseen chains
And awaken fully from this plateau of dreams
A tableau of frozen illusions
Painted I the mind of the cold exhale of winter
Gasping for breath, almost weeping hoarsely
And just as it fears it will succumb
To the darkness that encroaches all around
Weary and without hope…
It emerges victoriously from a cocoon of mud
To find warmth, light and prattling birds in symphony
No longer hidden away, ordinary and plain to see
It bursts forth with fragrance and color
With unspeakable bliss
Unfettered, loosened as though-
A thousand fluttering butterflies were set aloft
Into the open expanse of turquoise skies
Because of you and the healing power of your presence
This is my story, this is my poem
This has become my life
For I was that seedling, lost and alone
Keeping my pain bundled and buried beneath the dirt
I was afraid no one would understand
All the things that I had felt and seen
No one who could interpret my silent words
And not reject the dammed up tears that need to flow
Yet, you were there each time I called your name
And judgment wasn’t the reflection in your eyes
Because of you
I am learning not to fear what waits around the corner
Stepping out, with my mended heart in hand
Because of you, I am a flower blooming
Ready and able to open my petals wide
You are the light that encourages me to reach out
And the raindrops that satisfies my thirst inside
Your heartbeats have become music to my ears
The syncopated hoof beats are merely drum taps
That sound out future celebration
Thank you, my friend for taking me through my paces
But never to a place that hurt
Because you were my solace and my safest retreat
I am becoming what I was created to be…ME!
Fully alive, whole and finally free
