Embrace
There was something elusive about her
A languid dreamlike aura, so faraway and lost
As though she had leaped into a bottomless canyon
And had been soaring there for months
Turning cartwheels and somersaults in midair
I could only gaze in fascination at her doleful eyes
A profusion of liquid
Deep pools of starless nighttime sky
She stared intently at a nonexistent doorway
That looked to me like a cinderblock wall
She blinked, then broke into a subtle, knowing smile
In recognition of he who stood between the beams
It was her father, tanned and wind blown
He had come for her, as she knew he would
But why had it taken so long?
Since he was a sheepherder, he was holding a lamb
That appeared as frightened and frail as she
In arms that were adorned with scratches and bruises
With hands weathered, cracked
Bloody and fractured as the fault lines
That had divided her soul
He took a step closer, he seemed out of breath
His voice quivered with emotion and anticipation
Trembled with concern, but was as harmonious as a concerto
He traveled some distance to find her here
She had been taken so far from home
Dusky and throaty, he lyrically soothed
"Forget about the past now"
"And let us just embrace"
"Let me smooth away the roughness"
"I want to kiss your face"
All the time that she'd been waiting
That was precisely what she wished to hear
Yet, now that it was stated
A vaporous sadness welled up inside
Pangs of self-pity throbbed throughout her being
"Like a bush, I burn but am not consumed"
"Neither can my love for you be destroyed"
"That is why I have come all this way to find you"
He whispered in a voice that melted all of her fears
"When I discover that one of my flock has been injured"
"With a broken leg or a crushed spirit"
"I bind them up and carry them on my shoulders"
"It is during this time that we bind like chords of music"
"We become one, never to be separated again"
"So close to my mouth, they learn to recognize my voice"
"So when they are out wandering in the fields"
"Encountering danger, there is deliverance in my call"
He reached out to her, still clutching the other lamb
"Let me pluck you up, like a forgotten bloom in the shadows"
"Bathe you in sunlight and enfold you near to my heart."
Through the tears she nodded, then raised her arms to him
"Yes, Papa, I will forget about the past now!"
"All I desire is your embrace"
"Please smooth away the roughness"
"I want to kiss your face."
